Welcome to Our June Issue

June is finally here, and it couldn’t be better. There is so much to do and enjoy this year, and I am so happy to bring you this issue of Natural Awakenings.

This month is especially near and dear to me, because there is an insightful article, “Eat Right to Sleep Well,” on page 24. As a registered sleep technologist, my goal every month is to give you tips and tricks to help you sleep better, and this month is no exception. The daylight hours get longer in the summer, and I know that you want to enjoy every moment of this glorious weather, but it is important to get the proper amount of sleep, as well. This article allows you the best of both worlds: enjoy those summer days while eating foods that will help you get better rest when you hit that bed!

I am an avid animal lover and single “dog mom.” Not surprisingly, my French bulldogs are my life, and I travel with them frequently. On page 26, this month’s Natural Pet article, “Pets Welcome Here,” explores just that topic. Take extra notice of the top 10 cities for dogs, presented in the sidebar on page 27. Chicago made the list! So grab your furry friends and take advantage of all that our area has to offer.

While on the subject of animal love, I am both amazed and saddened that, with all of our mind-blowing advances in virtual reality, we still use animals for product testing. I do take hope, though, in knowing I am not alone in this feeling—many people are agreeing that if makeup is produced using the ugly process of animal testing, it cannot qualify as a “beauty” product. On page 20, “All-Natural Beauty” discusses how going natural is taking over the beauty industry. A growing number of natural products for your face and body are on the market, as a growing number of people are finding that their natural beauty is even healthier for them, emotionally, physically and spiritually. There is even a section in this article regarding natural perfumes. I hope that you find this article not only informative, but also motivational, inspiring you to apply its concepts to your own beauty routine.

Now, let’s talk about running. I took up jogging in January, and since it has helped me lose quite a bit of weight, I was excited to see this month’s Fit Body article, “Running with the Kids,” presented on page 22. It explains that running builds not only health, but also bonds between family members. Even if you don’t have children (mine happen to have fur), this article may help you decide to start running with a friend or relative.

In closing, I want to thank you so much for picking up this magazine and reading the articles that are put in here for you. I know that life gets busy, but I truly appreciate the quiet time that you have taken to enjoy looking through the articles. It is a joy to bring this to you every month, and I feel that it just keeps getting better. Enjoy these wonderful moments of summer, and thank you again for making Natural Awakenings part of your summer reading.
